Behind the name...

'Hygge' (pronounced who-geh) is a Danish word with no direct translation. The closet word to it in English would be something like 'cosy'. I first stumbled across the word about seven years ago when I was doing quite a bit of research into my Scandinavian ancestry. I fell in love with the concept of hygge immediately. The word can be used to describe a feeling, atmosphere or object. For example, a candle lit dinner with friends would be considered hygge, a hot cup of tea, a bowl of porridge or a woollen blanket. Hygge is a massive part of Danish culture and has since become a big part of mine. As soon as I started my range of ceramics I knew it would represent them perfectly.

Where...

All my ceramics are made lovingly by me, McKenzie, in my studio, nestled in the Byron Bay hinterland. I combine both throwing & hand building in my work, and find myself inspired by the often disproportionate shapes of Scandinavian pottery & the refined aesthetic of Japanese pottery, as well as an over all focus on functionality & practicality. I want my work to be both staple items & visually stimulating objects.
